Form 26AS
Form 26AS is an annual consolidated tax statement issued by the Income Tax Department showing all taxes deducted, collected, or paid against a taxpayer's PAN.
Definition
Form 26AS is a consolidated annual tax credit statement maintained by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) for every PAN holder in India. It serves as a comprehensive ledger of all tax-related credits, TDS deducted by employers and other deductors, TCS collected by sellers, advance tax and self-assessment tax paid, and refunds received, during a financial year.
For Indian taxpayers and businesses, Form 26AS is an indispensable document during income tax return filing. The tax credits reflected in Form 26AS are automatically matched against the claims made in the income tax return. Any mismatch (such as claiming TDS credit that does not appear in Form 26AS) can result in the credit being denied, demand notices, or processing delays. This is why ensuring that deductors file accurate TDS returns (which populate Form 26AS) is critical.
Form 26AS can be accessed through the TRACES portal (tdscpc.gov.in), the Income Tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in), or through net banking of authorised banks. With the introduction of the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), Form 26AS now works alongside these newer statements to provide a complete picture of a taxpayer's financial transactions and tax compliance.
