Group changes that affect GL coding, classification or pricing are tracked events. The audit trail captures the change, the affected items, the approver and the effective date, because a bulk edit at the group level is the single most destructive operation in an item master.

What buyers ask.
How deep can the group hierarchy go?
Up to 5 levels, though most businesses use 3: category, sub-category, item. Going deeper increases maintenance overhead without improving the reporting, and a hierarchy nobody maintains is worse than a shallow one that stays true.
When we change a group GL, does it affect historic transactions?
No. Group-level changes apply prospectively. Historic transactions retain their GL at posting. The audit trail captures the change as a tracked event with the cut-over date.
Can a single item belong to multiple groups?
The primary group is one, and it drives the GL and the classification defaults. Secondary groups for analytics (segment, brand, channel) are supported as item attributes that do not affect GL coding but do enable additional roll-up reporting.
