CIN (Corporate Identity Number)

A unique 21-digit alphanumeric identifier assigned to every company registered with the Registrar of Companies in India.

Definition

The Corporate Identity Number (CIN) is a unique 21-character alphanumeric code assigned by the Registrar of Companies (RoC) to every company incorporated in India under the Companies Act, 2013. The CIN is issued at the time of company incorporation and remains with the company throughout its existence. It serves as the primary identifier for a company in all dealings with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and is printed on the Certificate of Incorporation. For example, a CIN like U72200KA2020PTC123456 encodes specific information about the company.

The 21-digit CIN follows a structured format that reveals key details about the company. The first character (U or L) indicates whether the company is unlisted or listed. The next five digits represent the industry code based on the National Industrial Classification (NIC). The following two characters denote the state code where the company is registered (e.g., KA for Karnataka, MH for Maharashtra). The next four digits indicate the year of incorporation. The three characters after that represent the company type (PTC for Private Limited, PLC for Public Limited, GAP for Section 8 companies). The final six digits are a unique serial number assigned by the RoC.

The CIN is required on virtually all official company documents and filings in India. It must be printed on the company letterhead, invoices, official notices, and all correspondence as mandated under Section 12(3) of the Companies Act, 2013. Banks require the CIN for opening corporate accounts, and it is essential for filing returns on the MCA portal. The CIN is also used by third parties to look up company information on the MCA21 portal, including details of directors, filed financial statements, charges registered against the company, and compliance status. This makes it a crucial tool for conducting due diligence on any Indian company.
